Традиционный обряд обретения силы у индейских племен Равнин [ Plains Indians], в частности у племен арапахо [ Arapaho], шайеннов [ Cheyenne], сиу [ Dakota], кайова [ Kiowa], а также омаха [ Omaha], пауни [ Pawnee] и уичита [ Wichita] (в общей сложности около двух десятков племен). Для его проведения в конце весны или начале лета общины племени собирались в общее стойбище. Во время обряда воины-добровольцы под бой барабана, музыку и поощрительные возгласы шаманов начинали танец на площадке Пляски солнца [sundance square], длившийся трое-четверо суток, чтобы приобщиться к силе через голод и боль. В момент кульминации обряда участники пляски прокалывали кожу и мышцы груди и (или) спины специальной шпилькой с веревкой или ремнем на конце. Другой ее конец закреплялся на столбе, вокруг которого они танцевали, натягивая веревку до тех пор, пока шпилька не разрывала удерживающие ее мышцы и кожу. В других вариантах пляски к шпильке привязывались черепа бизонов, которые участники обряда волокли по земле. Обряд не раз запрещался Министерством внутренних дел США (в 1880-е и в 1904), с 1933 в очередной раз разрешен и получил широкое распространение в 1970-е, став символом сохранения самобытной культуры индейцев.тж sundance -
